iPod Earbuds
“Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast.” Or so we’ve been told for centuries. For the most part that’s probably true. The problem is, what some consider music, others consider raucous noise and would prefer that you keep it to yourself. This is obviously why iPods and earbuds were invented. Sounds simple enough, but then there is a savage beast to soothe, so here are a few pointers to consider.
Indeed music is good for the soul, but there are a couple of health issues that are worth keeping in mind. Hearing loss has been associated with frequent use of ipod earphones, so keep that volume setting at under 50% if you want to continue to enjoy music. Again, a higher quality headset will produce adequately pleasing sound at this setting.
The other issue is hygiene. Be a clean beast, not a filthy beast. Have you ever gone a few days without cleaning your ears? Have you seen the gunk that comes out on that cotton swab when you finally get around to doing it? Now imagine using that same cotton swab every time you clean your ears. That’s essentially what you’re doing with your iPod earbuds if you don’t keep both your ears and your earbud headphones clean. Simple warm water, mild soap, and two clean washcloths are all you need. For specifics, you can check out demonstration videos online. Frequent cleanings are easier, take less time, and extend the life of your earphones, so don’t neglect them.
Some people have trouble keeping iPod earbuds in their ears, especially if they’re engaged in vigorous physical activity like jogging. Assuming you’ve got the left and right earpieces matched to your left and right ear and firmly seated with the stalk portion angled down, a head band worn over your ears will help keep them in place. It also helps to make sure your iPod is securely stationed and not moving around a lot. Friction can cause static electricity to build up (especially when in contact with synthetic fabrics,) and there you are with a perfect conductor going straight into your head through your ears. Ouch! Not so soothing. To some the inconvenience of dealing with dangling wires, particularly during exercise, will cause them to seek wireless iPod earphones.
Which brings us to yet another word of caution: if you’re outdoors, be extra aware of your surroundings visually to compensate for diminished hearing, especially if you’re female. Notice people around you and don’t be embarrassed to turn around regularly to check behind you. Joggers in particular with iPod headphones in their ears appear to others that they have tuned out the rest of the world and unwittingly make themselves targets for attack (usually from someone NOT listening to music on earphones.)
There are many different brands and styles of iPod earbuds because there are many different types of music lovers. So, in the pursuit of the ultimate in charming beast-soothing musical enjoyment, take the time to shop and do your homework. It’s well worth the effort. Discovering the best earbuds for iPod players is a highly individual process, but with proper due-diligence, the reward is a better listening experience for months or possibly years to come.
