The Bose QuietComfort 15 Headphones are not cheap at $300. Although some quibble with the construction components (heavy use of plastic), those that have compared generally acknowledge that the active noise cancelling performance is unequaled. Bose pioneered noise cancelling headphones technology specifically for air travel over two decades ago and have refined the technology over the years.
Reading through many of the 300 plus buyer reviews at Amazon, below are actual quotes of reviewers:
- “Flip the switch you are teleported into outer space.”
- “It was like I was in my own, private sound booth.”
- “with the noise-cancellation engaged, I’m completely isolated from the surrounding din. Nirvana.”
- “When I turned on the QC-15, it was like shutting off the world.”
I was intrigued by reading such comments that I made it a point to seek out a local retailer where a demo set were available to try and I must agree that the sensation encountered upon turning the noise cancelling. Though I have not yet purchased a set, I am planning to purchase a pair prior to a 12 hour plane flight in September.
Several reviewers noted that music cannot be played without the active noise cancelling circuitry being on. While this does not seem like a deal-breaker, this could be a consideration for those requiring that feature on an occasional basis. The reported battery life is 35 hours, and uses AAA batteries. Other features are a detachable case, fold-flat ear cups for more compact storage, and a carrying case.
What Make Bose Noise Cancelling Different
Apparently what makes the QuietComfort Comfort noise cancelling function so well is their proprietary design that employs microphones outside the ear pad that picks up ambient sound; and the Digital Signal Processor in the headphone computes the reverse of the signal and emits to the listener’s ears. This technology works so well many users purchase them primarily for this feature; that is they turn the circuitry on without playing music. Many use them to eliminate distractions in a work environment without playing music. They can also be deployed effectively for those having trouble sleeping due to outside noises.
While the price may be beyond the budget for many, for those who travel and can arrive without being fatigued and for others that can be more productive in their work environment, the price of the Bose QuietComfort 15 Headphones is may be considered a bargain.
